View Full Version : Need Help - Clicking & Clutch

When my clutch is disengaged I get a clicking noise that happens about 2 to 3 times per second. The noise is coming from below the main fuse box (passengers side) in the engine bay.

When I engage the clutch the clicking noise stops.

I have had two ideas given to me. 1) From Miata forum: The clutch slave push rod needs lubricated and 2) From dealership mechanic: Maybe bad clutch switch.

However, the clutch slave is on the drivers side and I think that is the same for the clutch switch. So I have ruled those out as this is not the area where the noise is coming from.

Any ideas what is causing this. And how do I get into the area below the main fuse box to try to determine what the source might be. (If I have to do this, I hope the car stays on the jack stands as to find the source the clutch has to be disengaged. )

I just took a Xmas paper wrapping tube to better isolate the clicking.

Now it sounds like it is coming from one of the solenoids that are a part of the engine management system.

I can not see how the clutch would have anything to do with this..

More symptoms on the problem.

1) The purge solenoid valve is vibrating. Could not find anything else that was vibrating.

2) It clicks and vibrates when the clutch pedal is pushed to the floor. (I might have engaged and disengaged mixed up.)

3) It clicks and vibrates whenever the clutch pedal is pushed to the floor - meaning in neutral or in gear.

This is driving me crazy.

I know nothing of which you speak, but will speak to that which I know.

There are a lot of wires running around the clutch pedal area and I had one (unrelated, alarm system) that snagged the clutch pedal, or got pinched by it or something, and developed an intermittent break. Perhaps a wire going to that solenoid passes near the clutch pedal?

However, the clutch slave is on the drivers side
If it is still suspect, the clutch slave is most definitely on the passenger side.

Thanks. I will have someone look at that.
