Need to change the engine oil this week. What brand and weight are you using?

It is recommended to use synthetic oil when boosting an engine.
I use Mobil1 10W30.

Mobil 1 10w30. I can go 3-4 thousand miles and drain it and it is still honey colored. Great stuff.

I just picked up some Amsoil 10W-30 "Turbo Formulated" synthetic motor oil. Let's see how well this oil works. The fine print says it's good for up to 25,000 miles or up to one year, whichever comes first. I will still change it at 3,000 mles.

From what I read about Amsoil you can just change filters and have your oil analyzed somewhere to determine if it needs changing. I think I read an experiment in a diesel ran several hundred thousand miles on the same oil without degradation (just adding for the filter change) and diesel trucks are harder on oil than a little supercharged gas engine.
I was planning on maybe doubling miles between oil changes and not try to push it. Haven't started using it yet. Have to break in the rebuilt engine that overheated (using Mobile 1) and destroyed the cylinders.

Mobil 1 is good stuff.
I've been a Castrol man for years... must be my British car/bike upbringing (plus I can't get Duckhams any more.) I've been running the German Castrol 0W-40 (a.k.a. Green Castrol) while NA, but am on my last quarts so in preparation for the blower I'll move up to 5W on the next change.

Duckhams? Next you'll want Lucas ignition in your Miata just to feel right.
Your kit will be hand delivered next week. ;)

Over on miatanet there has been some discussion on Mobil 1 oil weights. Someone contacted a Mobil engineer for some info. As I recall the 10W-30 barely makes the SAE viscosity requirements for 30 wt oils at high temps, while the 5W-30 was solidly in the middle of the range. I'm using up my cache of 10W-30 in my OTM and switching the Miata to 5W-30.

I use Mobil 1 5w30.
I have about 2000 miles on my oil now. At 3000 miles I'll be sending a sample of the oil to have analyzed to see just what interval is optimal.

Tom how does that oil work in the 05. I have a few second sluggish start in the 02 and some say if I stop using synthetic the hard start might go away. The OCV some say do not like synthetic oils.

Well, I have used M1 for years and years but now have changed my thoughts. Te 05 was the cause. I found that regular oil (like Quaker State) worked better with the Oil Control Valve for the VVT on the 05. DOn't know why, but it does. Engine seems to be a bit smoother as well but i think that also relates to the VVT/OCV.
When we recently took the trip to Cleveland pulling the trailer with the 99, I ended up going about 3800 miles on the oil change and it lost almost a quart. Normally I am religious about cahnging oil every 3000 miles but a long trip can screw that up as it was over 2000 miles in a couple days and I had about 1500 miles on the oil before I left. Anyhow, I consumed about a quart in that 3800 miles. While there, I changed the oil to Quaker State and when I got home, about 2500 miles later, I had as much oil as I started with. It is now about 3300 miles and ready for a change and is still full.

Seeing as how I only have ever had a 99 Miata, on my car, the oil analysis shows that I could have gone to at LEAST 4000 miles and probably even to 5000 miles before changing the oil. I have never had to add oil between oil changes since I've had my car. I bought it at 50,000 miles and I have 80,000 miles now.

Too bad it's not the other way around with the filters being such a
PITA. Change the oil leave the filter....Oh well.

Read my posts again about my oil analysis. The analysis not only shows that the oil has enough additives to last to 4000~5000 miles, but it also shows that the filter is still doing its job very well at 3500 miles when I changed the oil.
