Well: The motors in and running fine. Still need to get the idle air control thingey reworked and I've got a few minor squaks, but she drove fine out to Lake Havasu City last night. 220 miles on the "new" motor which is the "old" motor reborn. I wish I could rename this car "ZOMBIE" shes been dead and brought back to life so many times; but I'd loose my post count. AC not working probably a connection missed. cruise control out. again most likely a connection. Yesterday Mike replaced the leaky steering rack, fixed a very leaky tail shaft seal, and tidied up all the compter/PC-Pro wireing. So when I get back shell have well over 600 miles under her belt. I'll do an oil/filter job then off to the dyno AGAIN!:hammer:

I'd let you use the name "Lazarus", but my daughter named my '77 Chevy 3/4 ton pickup that after we brought it back from the dead for the third time -- something about a rod going through the side of the block on her way to a high-school football game a few years back...
We wait with baited breathe for news & results... :tooth:

It is good to hear she is back alive and breathing again! Keep your eye on her though, I'm not sure if she can be trusted?

300 miles on it so far with minimal problems! :driving: AC and cruise control to be fixed Friday morning then she goes on the dyno if she has a clean bill of health:taz:Test monkey out!

:driving:Got her back out of the shop yesterday and plan to take her up to Havasu tonight to get some more miles on the motor. Been waiting on the new pulleys to get back from the anodizer. Bout another week and we can strap her to the dyno!:) PS: Tom! Did the pulleys show up yesterday?
Elphaba
05-26-2008, 09:32 AM
:) Well. I drove her back to Havasu again. Had a little fuel leak from Tom's new billet dual feed fuel rail, but that got fixed ( i think) Tom wanted a few more miles on the motor prior to strapping to the dyno again. So now the cars ready but Tom is in Houston for a week or so. Looks like the very next possability of dyno time would be Saturday the 31st but thats a long shot. Probably the 1st week of June. I was hopeing to try running the 100mm pulley with the stock AFM just to see if it would work; but the guys at the anodizing shop dropped and damaged it...:2guns:So well be starting with the 105mm. Thats your weekly update. Test Monkey out!

Back together and back on the dyno in 100F heat and :) :) :)
Okay... I'll bite on this one -
...just how :) :) :) was it?

Well, for starts, it back to an absolutely stock, Mazda piston, engine. It redlined with 10PSI on 91 octane 6 times in a row in the 100F (in the shade) heat flawlessly. We were running a bit rich but I'm pretty sure that was due to the stock ECU trying to compemnsate for VERY HOT water. :) Dan wants to wait to tune until he can replace the stock radiator with a good Koyo. It would have easily made 165WHP but we will wait until he gets back from Havasu and gets the radiator.
The smilies above were because, with the Chinese import pistons, it was done on the third pull and that was in cool weather with cool water temps. By the 4th pull yesterday, the water was REAL hot and you could see the effects of the ECU adding fuel and pulling timing. However, 7000 RPM in that heat on 91 with no ping was a "sound" my ears have waited a year to hear. My optimism is high for this product now and lots more power. Last I saw of the engine from hell, it was sitting out back of the shop waiting for the anchorless boat to swim by and pick it up.
ps. Mazda makes great pistons.

:yes:Koyo 37mm is on the way:yes: Should be at my house by the time I get back on Monday. Tom; Any reason ADC couldnt put it in, along with a "correct" spacer for the pulley? PS: Im Pay'n for Johns Wrench time yesterday and the Radiator.
Tom @ Fast Forward
06-04-2008, 11:40 AM
I'm sure ADC could put it in. I can drop off the aluminum tape there for them to seal the radiator. Not sure how fast I can get some 1/4" pulley spacers made? What I'd really like to do is get the pulley 1/4" longer. We can replace that later.
If I get up that way, I'll drop off the tape.

 Tom,You need to start thinking POSITIVE again:angel: For those interested she goes back on the dyno Tuesday morning. Koyo is in and I think I have a cure for the poor airflow from the dyno fan to help keep things "cool" in the AZ heat...:chillpill:

Some of you guys really like to twist the knife, don't you. :) You could have let me have 48 hours to bask in the light of success before you asked that. :2guns:
Well, for giggles, I gave up waiting for the samples from the casting house and needed to re-order for the 94-97 soooo, I should have some blanks in here in 3-4 weeks. We will look at machining one as soon after that as we can.
Great! Now where's the coldside version? :)
Tom @ Fast Forward

I'm sure some of you would like to see a graph and some statistics so, here goes:
Base pulley ratio of 105/65 which adds ~80WHP to the 1.8L
Base WHP (corrected) was 90
New WHP (corrected) was 170 (Gain of 80)
Torque shows 155 but there was a tach pickup glitch. Actual was about 142
Ambient 106F
28.86" Hg
5% RH
Correction Factor 5%
Uncorrected WHP 160.96
Timing was stock 10* BTDC
Hard to make power in the Arizona heat. :)
The engine is bone stock. We went back to the original block, diamond honed the cylinders and installed stock 91 Mazda pistons. Head is also bone stock. Should have done that 16 months ago. JDM engines (the engine from hell) suck and aftermarket pistons suck. Mazda knows how to make them right.

:seeya: Hey Tom! Wheres the graph that Keith printed out for me of the last run 170hp 143 Tq??? PS: On the drive home she went like a raped test monkey!
Tom @ Fast Forward
06-17-2008, 04:12 PM
Well, I'm not sure why, but it seldom is exactly the same on my computer as it is on his? However, he had 170 and mine shows 169.xx so they are pretty close. Mine shows that glitch in the tach pickup so I had to scan to fine the 142 Torque but that is what he had as well. I am running the same DJ software but there must be some difference. I do set the smoothing to 5 and he runs 0 so that could make mine 1 WHP less and 1 WTq less? We wont quibble over 1 :) The stats are from the file and it was 106F. My car temp said 110 when I pulled out of the drive. We should run it again in the winter when it gets back to about 99F. Probably pick up 30 WHP?

I'm the first one on the PLANET to have this!!!! Not worth the wait; or the expence; or all the weirdness of the last 17 months, but POOP! Im the ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD TO HAVE THIS!!!! WOOO HOOOO! Only larger pulley I have, so far, for your crank is the 110mm we made. Maybe when the weather cools off a bit. We did set a record high yesterday, by the way.

Hotside, coldside. If I can get a turnkey package that give me 170HP on my 1.6 I could not care if it were lukewarm side!! LOL

6 rib belt with auto-tensioner. Definitely no belt issues.
Dan is renowned as being able to break things so we are going to give him until the firsr of August to try and break this one. We are currently going through a period of global warming (115F+), so it should be a good test.
Hey Tom,
Subscribed and hungry for info. Drew and Elpheba have been filling me in on their stories thus far...
Looking (fast) forward to talking more.
Tom @ Fast Forward
07-01-2008, 12:37 PM
Latest from Dan is that it is still running strong with no problems. Only problem it has ahd is idle. My new 90-93 IAC bracket had an error. They are installing a revised version today. If it works as expected, that one and only problem should be gone.
Everytime I ask how it is going, all I get for an answer is :):):):):). Anybody know what that means? ;)

Dan's car is still running well, last I heard. He has been punishing it in this AZ summer heat. We are thinking of turning the kit loose in late August.
Those who want on the list should send me an email. I have a few already. I would like to let them out slowly just in case.

Hey Tom,
Plenty of interest over here in blighty - and growing!

Any ballpark idea of shipping costs from coldside sales?
Tom @ Fast Forward
07-22-2008, 12:28 PM
Shipping should be about $300 but the USPS is upping pricing due to the increased price in oil so it could be $350. We only charge the actual cost at the time of shipping.
Interesting that Phil has a MP62 kit for the 1.6L as well. 200WHP on just stock 1.8L injectors in a hotside 1.6L kit sounds a bit strong to me but I wish him well with that.
Have you had any other interested parties from the UK. If so perhaps we can optimise shipping!
Does the bottleneck in blower supply impact the end of THIS MONTH target?

Nobody else from the UK. :(
It should have no effect on the delivery. :)

At the moment, the PC-Pro Timing Card won't work on the 90-93 and we used the JR-BTC on Dan's 91. There are 8 of those 'new' left in the world. We are trying to come up with something that will let us sell more than 8. :) At the moment it looks like we will be able to ship 8.
But my 96 should be OK with the PC Pro TC?
Tom @ Fast Forward
08-02-2008, 06:59 PM
Yes it shpuld.
Three connectors in your ECU?
On a RHD the ECU is under the kick plate under the carpet on the passenger/LHS. I managed to get the three nuts off the aluminium plate under the carpet but there appears to be two rivet type things at the bottom which I couldn't move (I haven't tried to drill, smash etc.).
Anyone any clues?
Apparently they're security nuts that are round and have no knurling. Mole grips or dremel are the answer. Guess Mazda don't like us getting in there :hammer:
I've sent a photo via email. Looks like only two - have they short changed me???:taz:

What's the latest on the availability date for 1.6 hotsides?

Careful or I will add a week everytime you ask that question. :)
I have all the brackets and am ordering the parts for Andrfew's kit tomorrow. It might be wise to install his and then sell more but I am open to taking orders now and will order/ship in the order the orders come in. I am 99% confident in the product now. I KNOW Dan has not babied his. :)
