View Full Version : That stopped my heart for a couple beats

As a lot of you know, I keep trying to blow the engine in the 99 so I can have an excuse to rebuild it as #1 cylinder is low on pressure. So there I was minding my own business and beating on the 99. I took a glance at the AEM wideband and it was dead lean at 19:1 or worse. So I lifted real quick and took a couple tests. It was like a switch. 12:1 and then dead lean. However, the car ran too well for it to actually be dead lean. Today I stuck my portable AEM tailpipe wideband sensor and went for a ride. It read just fine. New widenband O2 sensor on order. Whew, (wipes sweat off brow). Good news is it is only the AEM O2 sensor. Bad news is, the engine still pulls strong at 150,000 miles. :(

How will a MP62 do at 20psi?

A really big pulley should take care of that pesky #1 cylinder.

I'm already at 18PSI NON-INTERCOOLED. PC-Pro is only good to 20. :) In all honesty, I thought the 18 PSI NON-INTERCOOLED would have done it in. #1 was weak before the change from 14PSI to 18 PSI and there has really been no change. After 80,000 miles, the blower is making some bearing noise but it wont quit either. I was going to pull it and send it in for warranty (only has 80,000 miles and just under 3 years so still in warranty) but had hopes of pulling the whole engine/blower and doing it all at the same time. Neither one will quit? :taz: LOL

Only thing I can think of to do it in is swap to a MSPNP.

Maybe a good trackday beating will do it ;)

I got a new sensor for the wideband, but need to weld in an extra bung to mount it permanently. The chrome pipe for plumbing a sink stuck in the tail pipe was getting to many weird comments.

My Knock Link is finally "in the mail" (ordered it 8 weeks ago), as my back up for the A/F meter (and it has an idiot light).

The question is where to put the light. I moved the G-Timer (G meter) and ScanGauge to side by side over the mirror (they fit nicely), so I can put the meters under the radio.

Tom mentioned lean may run really hot, but not detonate - true? Do I want an EGT as well.

Tom: How many miles did you end up getting out of the AEM WB sensor?

Yes, if you are REAL lean, you can melt a piston and not ping. If you get an EGT, you need a probe for each cylinder. I don't have one and have not seen the need as yet. Your call.

Pat,

That wideband has been in the car for several years. I ask my wife if she remembered when and she said "forever". It may date all the way back to just after the BRP hotside install at 30,000 miles. I had an LM-1 for awhile but got tired of replacing sensors. I was one of their early customers (2003?) and they had a problem of the sensor to cable connector not being well enviornmentally sealed. If you hit water, adios sensor. I replaced it with the AEM at 50,000 miles? If so, roughly 100,000 miles on the AEM sensor. Mind you, they are the identical sensor and pigtail. It was simply a matter of keeping that connector under the car clean. I got some of that really neat silicon rubber tape (looks like thick electrical tape). When it sticks to itself, it never comes apart again. It forms a perfect seal. The ultimate answer to weatherproofing ANYTHING. :)

Very, very good Tom.
You are right about that silicon tape...good stuff.
It's in my top five list of all time favorites:
1) Red/Blue Loctite
2) zip ties
3) duct tape (foil faced)
4) perma gasket
5) Silicon tape
6) JB Weld...

I could go on and on...

Those of us who started with British cars years ago know baling wire intimately. ;)

There is nothing wrong with British cars, well not if you like getting your hands dirty!

Yeppers, I started with AH Bugeye Sprites, MGA's and MGB's...
It's wonderful to have a roadster whose lights work in the rain...

I still have a small bottle of dash pot oil, Ha!
