I have a friend who is a very skilled fabricator, and part of the services he offers is custom headers. Generally he works on drag cars and show cars doing rollcages, frames, suspensions, and what-not.

I was visiting with him last month, and I asked what it would take to do a knock-off of the Gibb header. He told me that instead of copying the Gibb header, he has a computer program that does header design and that he would just need a car to do the prototyping on. The design would be to fit a hotside, but I guess he could do one for a coldside too. This probably would only be beneficial to the guys (and gals) trying to make more than 200 hp.

Basically, he can build headers to order with prices ranging from $500 and up depending on materials and finishes.

My question is if anyone here would be interested?

I have a 1999 which had a 2 cat CA. LEV.
Here's my dilemma: CARB biennial inspections. A major PIA for 99/00 2 cat. Calif owners.
I currently sidestep that issue with the 2001 tubular manifold with the heat shields.
The secret to passing visual lies in the oem heat shields.

So, my question would be:
Can your friend fab a header using larger primaries and a nifty Burns merge collector:

And get this to fit under the 2001 oem heat shields?

Damn, those collectors are expensive! But he can do a stainless header to go with them.

Maybe the trick is to make a heat shield that looks stock rather than constraining the header design. I know he has an english wheel and bead roller.

All told you are looking at an expensive way to get a few HP.

Naaa, the custom heat shield will stick out and raise a red flag.
When I did my 2001 conversion, and while I had the header apart, I took some measurements and looked at the clearence between the oem primaries and the heat shield.
Assuming 1.75" dia. short primaries with a tight bend at the flange (I know, not the best) it looked to me that it could be possible.

Although, I do agree, a lot of work for a small gain.

Perhaps I should stay with the 2001 manifold/heat shield and call it a day.

I did have the 2001 manifold welded on the exterior between the primaries and the header flange and down at the collector flange, after which I took my trusty Dremel and ground smooth all the interior welds at both ends. Every little bit helps.

Tom, wants tell them about the early days of FFS and the dyno runs with a full exhaust system and with only the down pipe

Nah! You guys just need a friendly shop. Mine passed Cal visual with a Trackdog Blanket.

....any time Pat. He's a small shop and would love the business. Just 1 block from my house too.
