RE: the oil/air separator: Any concern that the lint trap or steel wool material might somehow break off and go through the engine?

I don't know. He is recommending the really thick stuff that should be relatively immune to breaking into fine particles like fine steel wool might do. I wonder if there were something else that could be stuffed in there. He has a contact address so you could ask that question. I'm sure he would like any feedback.
