I tried using a small 90 degree elbow, which place the air cleaner in front of the windshield, but couldn't fabricate a box open to the base of the windshield to save my life. Without the box, I would get heat soak in slow traffic.

Last weekend I reconnected the flex pipe, put the MAF down by the generator. I then cut a section out of the plastic bottom tray and put the air cleaner behind the fog light. The fender liner already has a hole that fits the flex pipe.

Finally got to drive it this morning. The supercharger whine is much quieter, and a stumble around 3 pounds of boost seems to be gone.

Now I just have to stay out of deep puddles.

I did the same thing last year. Where is your intake air temp sensor
located? Mine is still zip tied up in the passenger corner of the engine
bay. Can't say I noticed any real difference but it has to be better than
right behind the radiator. I also removed the passenger side fog light
for full air flow.

It works well, at least on the '99+ models (I'll have to take a closer look at the '94-'97 when I get a chance), to put the air filter over behind the driver's side headlight. I use an L bracket to bolt to the MAF and an open bolt hole over there. Mazda put a "cold air" inlet on the front side of the driver's side wheel well and there is a hole right above that which directs the ambient air straight up and behind the driver's side headlight. I have datalogged there and even without a cold airbox you will see less than 10 deg over ambient when in motion there. When stopped it will start to rise in temp and can get up to 20-30 deg F over ambient until you start moving again. With the cold airbox in that location, like Ari's design, the air temps stay within 5 deg over ambient all the time.

Just thought I would mention an alternative to you in case you do have any issues with water puddles and such. Admittedly, that was one thing that concerned me a little bit with the original Coldside design of the intake and I am glad that we now have the air filter back basically where the factory originally designed it to be.

The new cold air boxes are ready to sell. I'll post the info up soon.

BillI'm in California, so I want it to look like the instructions in case the tester checks. Where I had it before kept cool while I was moving, but in slow traffic, it got pretty hot.

Where it is, the air temp is nice and stable (and my Scan Gauge now gives me outside temp [sort of]).

Go Man Go,

I extended the air temp sensor wires and put it in the top of the air cleaner. I am running after market driving lights in place of the fog lamps, and they have a 1/2" gap around the edge, the fender liner has a lot of holes, and the piece I cut out of the plastic tray opened a 3" X 2" hole to the grill opening.

Now to see if it gets too wet.

Ah, I see Steve. That pesky CARB. I might need to talk to Tom about perhaps CARB approval for little items so that we could interchange them without issue out there in Kalifornia. No promises yet, but I will give it a shot.
