View Full Version : Run both fans...problems

After reading several suggestions about running both the cooling fan and the AC fan simultaneously without turning on the AC, I tried the method of shorting the control wires at the ECU. If either was told to come on, both were supposed to come on according to one forum entry (Mnet). I also tied the shorted pair to the foglight switch to gnd (disconnecting the fog light wires).

Another way is to tie the output of the relays together that some people think will burn out the relay contacts. Don't want that.

The switch does turn on both fans. Without pushing the switch, the light in the switch comes on when the fan comes on for some reason. Maybe that is a good thing, though confusing at first.

If running and the temp sensor and ECU decide to turn on the cooling fan, the AC doesn't come on as it is supposed to. Apparently the drive circuit in the ECU can't pull both relays.

The biggest problem with this idea, even if it worked right, is the P0480 CEL that is always on. If you don't care about any other possible CEL codes, no problem but I would like to know if everything is still working. If the fan control signals stay high or low at the wrong time, it sets the code.

I did the jumper wire method at the ECU almost 2 months ago and I have had ZERO codes so far

What year and if it is 01-05, what wire colors or ECM pin numbers. If it is not 01 up, the pins/colors would be different. I may have made a mistake but its so easy to get to and visibility is so good under the dash that I can't imagine it.

The 2 I intended to jumper were labeled with a "}" both together, "cooling fans system" pins 2B red/yel and 2C blu/wht.

I jumped wires 2B & 2C (01-05) to run both fans.
For 99-00, It's the 1I & 1R

Yes, mine is a 01' and I've had no problems.

When you do the jumper, do both fans come on when either is called for?

Id do that mod...

I'll try it on the 99 when I get it back. It might have an effect on my CARB tests on the 05? They don't like anything changed.

If it seems to be a really good thing, I could ship the new fuel controllers already set up Or put a male vampire clamp on one wire and a female clamp on the other and the customer could plug them together before install if he wanted the fans to work together.

Can someone tell me what the wire colors are for the 1I & 1R wires in a 99. I would like to try this mod, especially since I have a track day on Aug 11th.

I used a 3M vampire tap from one of the other kits over both wires and the spade terminal for the wire from the fog light switch. The switch caused both to come on if pressed but when the regular fan turned on for cooling the engine, the AC fan didn't. Maybe the tap thing wasn't making contact well enough on both wires.

Anyway, I got P0480 CELs which says the fan circuit not right. Maybe from the switch. I took it all off so I could see if I got other codes.

Speaking of which: After putting in the rebuilt engine, the idle speed keeps changing. I suppose the engine is loosening up and can idle with less throttle the more I drive it. At first I had to crank a few turns on the screw so the AC would run even when warmed up at idle. Eventually it was running at 1500 sometimes and slowly drop. So, I had a fast idle CEL.

99-00
1I= Blue&White
1R=Red&Green

01-05
2B=Red&Yellow
2C=Blue&White

I soldered an 1 1/2" piece of wire between the two.
I just don't trust those vampire clips or posi-taps.

Would this mod be a good idea for a '95 model and if so would anyone happen to know the wires that would need to be jumpered together? Also would it be possible to insert a switch in the jumper as the winters here in hillbilly land can at times be a degree or so below the nippy stage. This way I would think it would be possible to reverse the mod with the flip of a switch on those cold days.

Thanks very much in advance!
