View Full Version : Data Recording?

I have been looking at ways to record Boost, RPM & AFR data to best be able to tune our PC PROs for the FFS Cold side.
I have found this: Innovative SSI-4 $129.
This recorder will interface with our AEM Wideband and 4 other inputs. It can do AFR, RPM and boost & add injector pulse time or other functions. It interfaces with a laptop. So you make a run on the road, pull off read the chart, make adjustment to the PC Pro, run again & adjust until your AFR is perfect!
Has anyone tried this yet? Is there anything better for the price.
I think this would really minimize dyno time, or even elominate it entirely!
Comments please?

I am using the more expensive DL-32 and it works great. I'm sure the SSI-4 will work just fine to for 4 channels max of datalogging. The only thing with it would be you wouldn't be able to record boost (without having a boost sensor that outputs a 5v signal) but I think that might not be necessary anyway.

Bill,
Thanks for the reply. I was thinking about using a GM 3 Bar MAP. What do you think?

LOL. Jack, are you going for the gold too? I guess I need to order a large quantity of 130mm pulleys? :)

The DL-32 has a built in boost sensor. I have a DL-32 + the 4 channel unit to record all the information. I also like the DL-32 as it has a removable data storage that i use to transfer all the data and not worry about the laptop sliding around.

Anyone having experience with the Innovate LC-1 Wideband o2 ?
I consider to combine the DL-32 and the LC-1.

We are hoping for 145mm ;)

I had issues with the LC-1 but I think it was more in the display unit rather than the wide band measurement. I actually ended up using the 0-4VDC output of an Autometer wideband on mine. I had this fault happen twice to me.

Well Maybeee!LOL
I think, for my purposes the SSI-4 will do the trick. Being retired, the others are a little too pricy for me, and I have an extra laptop with XP.
I think it will record boost by wiring in a 3 bar MAP (still checking this out).
I would like to make it work by plugging it into the diagnostic port like the Scangauge II. (I have a spare scan guage cord). If I could figure it out.
There are soon to be 4 of us here in SW FL. when we get Dave's installed.
Then we could all benefit!

Just sent Dave an email. His is on it's way. WITH all the mods installed. :)

Did you ever try the combination LC-1 and DL-32 ?
Did you give up the LC-1 ?

To put it another way ......
Which one of the following combinations would you recommend:
1. DL-32 and the LC-1 Wideband O2.
2. DL-32 and AEM wideband O2.
3. DL-32 and Autometer wideband O2.
I want to do data-logging, but also display the AFR without the need of a laptop.
Nice to be able to record on the memory card as well.
The question is if the logging will be better with the LC-1/DL-32 combination.
But I have read (somewhere) about some issue about frequent calibration of the LC-1 wideband.
Anyone ?

I vote for door #2.

Either #2 or #3. I have #3 in the car now (for some period of time) and have had no issues.I read the 0-4VDC signal from the wide band and convert it to A/F. Have not had an issue with it. The LC-1 was input to the DL-32 and I don't remember having an issue with it but I also had the display on the dash with 2 displays and they both quit. I was not willing to spend the $$ to get replacements with the history I had with the display units so went the #3 wat and have had no issues.

I have the LC-1 setup.
The O2 sensor is damaged beyond hope with the excessive exhaust temps I am experiencing.
Any spirited runs on the freeway causes the dreaded code 8 (overheated sensor) on the LC-1 warning LED.
This is largely due to the level of timing retard I have to run.
(hence my aspirations to run water injection - I am hoping it will help with the timing retard issue as well as the EGT)
I also have a LMA-3 datalogger, but I keep postponing the installation, because I will not have meaningful data with a "fried" wideband.

Is your wideband sensor more than 18" away from the head?
Godless Commie

Way more than that, Tom..
I installed it just before the cat.
I even fabbed a very large, butterfly shaped heat sink out of thick copper for it..
Overheats often in summer, and during spirited runs these days.

I can't believe it is possible to cause that from heat? Especially from timing retard. I quit using the Innovate because one of the pins in the sensor plug was unused and water (darn rain) would get in through that open hole and damage something. By the third sensor, I found silicone tape and sealed the whole plug. Never had another problem.

Yeah, but code 8 is overheating, Tom.. And, it happens on dry days.
Also, the way I routed the wiring on that thing would not allow rain, etc to hurt it.

Get a Coldside? ;)
Godless Commie
11-29-2009, 06:51 PM
You know.... that is not entirely a nonissue. If you get my drift. ;)
I sure would like to beef up the engine a bit first, tho.
Nothing fancy; forged one piece crank, H-beam rods and slightly lower compression pistons.
THAT would be nice.
(let's just get out from under this crisis/recession thing for now..)

Considering I already have a blower, three sets of pulleys, a fifth injector, all the control cards, a BTB throttle Body, an automatic tensioner, a high flow fuel rail and a few other assorted bits and pieces, I am guessing it would not be a too difficult project to upgrade to a coldside, IF YOU GET MY DRIFT, TOM..

Well, pulled trigger on the SSI-4 today! Dave & I are sharing the expense.
We bought the SSI-4, Innovative MAP sensor & 4 - 12 pin male/female plugs. I will wire the cars so that we can plug & play from car to car.
It looks like I can wire for the TPS & Tach from the FFS P & P. Tach from the #1 injector wire.
The tricky part may be the grounding of the inputs.
So, we are looking forward to tuning our PC Pros with this new tool.
It should save about $350 in Dyno time. The only need for the Dyno will be for "braggin' HP & Torque".
