View Full Version : IAC question! (96/99 hybrid Coldside install)

Hi gang! My first post here!
Background - if any of you saw the polished 99+ MP62 Coldside kit on BRP's website a few weeks ago (in their clearance section), I'm the proud owner of it now! (At the time, someone suggested it was the last of the original BRP MP62 Coldsides, but BRP had another one advertised since).
Anyway, I've got a 96 Miata, so I've also picked up a 99 head to be installed at the same time - primarily to be able to mount the 99 Coldside manifold, of course, but also for the better valvetrain and improved flow. I was working on the install today, and ran into at least one issue I need to ask about here...
The instructions (printed, for a 99-05 install) show a neat little IAC valve setup - but that seems quite different from the IAC on my 96. How does the NA 1.8 version of the kit handle IAC? Is there a different mounting bracket for the 96 IAC, or should I obtain a 99 IAC?
Also, is there a diagram available of the vacuum routing for the NA 1.8? I don't think I ever saw a NA version of the documentation on the BRP site, only the NB documentation.
Thanks very much in advance,
Gordon

The IAC is different between the 94-97 and the 99-00. I would bet Tom can hook you up with the proper adapter for your IAC. I made my own since I needed to use the 1.6 IAC.
As for vacuum routing someone had a very nice layout posted on the BRP Coldside owners forum...

Gord,
Send me your address and I'll send you the proper mount for the early IAC valve. It ias significantly different but the 99+ may not work with your ECU/PCM. You will need to run the two water hoses up to the IAC. You can use these instructions. These are for the 99+. The major difference for the 94-97 would be the additional dual feed fuel rail but, in your case with the 99 head, you won't be using it anyhow.

Thanks very much, Tom - PM sent with address details!
Now that you mention fuel rails - I actually have a fuel rail issue too. The 99 head I got didn't come with the 99 fuel rail. BRP sent one of the billet rails that look a whole lot like the one you designed and posted pics in a BRP forum thread last fall. BUT - it doesn't seem to fit, the mounting holes are slightly off compared to the bolt holes on the 99 head. Is that fuel rail only for the 94-97, or should it fit a 99 head as well? If it's for 94-97 only, then I need to track down a 99+ fuel rail...

We only made fuel rails for the 94-97. We did start production on the fuel rails for the 99-05 yesterday. Should have them in about 2 weeks. They will be $175 each for any model year. They come with the brass adaptor for the FPR (94-97) or pulse damper (99-05). Let me know if you want one.
These can be used for dual feed if desired. They are tapped both ends. The brass adaptor can be mounted in any one of the three locations as desired. You can also use NPT to AN adaptors to convert to AN style connectors if desired.

With the 99-05's being a non return system, ie; fuel pump > fuel rail>l, what is the purpose of the new rail, more flow capasity > better distburation in the dual feed mode ?

YES - I'll take the first one available, ASAP!! As you described, a 99-05 rail configured for the 94-97 FPR is what I'll need.
The other (94-97) rail is beautifully made, and from threads on Miataforum there's big demand for a 99-05 version.
Thanks for the prompt replies, Tom! (Another PM sent!)
Edit - Hmmm, I think I sent another PM - but they both show as being in the "Outbox", and there's a "Sent Box" that's empty. Maybe I'm using it wrong - did you receive either PM? I'll try an e-mail as well)

Well, it looks awesome. :)
For the 99-05, it would strictly be a dress-up item on the coldside as extra fuel is not needed. For other systems that run larger injectors, it is almost a necessity. It can be either single or dual fed and has a much larger bore for much larger volume of flow with less pressure loss. For the 94-97 coldside, it is a requirement and is included in the kit. The 94-97 stock fuel rail interferes with the coldside. They are mutually incompatible. That was why we designed the new fuel rail.

I got them and just replied to the latest one. I apologize but my computer got a "minor" virus and took a bit of work to get back on line. All is well again. One of those interesting spyware programs. Norton wouldn't let it run and it was fighting Norton. All fixed now. Sorry for the delay. I have been fighting this plague for almost a week now.
