Vacuum lines

What is the best material for vacuum tubing, are hard or firm material or soft and flexable?

Up to 1/4" it doesn't matter too much. Larger has to have a relatively stiff wall or the vacuum will colapse it. I have seen some pretty limber 1/4" vacuum line but it has a thick wall to lend support.
