View Full Version : Get together in Coolidge AZ
Tom @ Fast Forward

I am trying to put together a gathering out here for Memorial Day weekend.
Steaks, swimming, beer, pop, etc. I was also thinking about a dyno day on either the Friday or Saturday. I will have to check with the dyno guys to see if they would be willing to do it that weekend?
Any thoughts, comments? Open to all Miata-ites who would like to come. We have room here for a few and there are a couple (by the hour?) motels here in Coolidge that I can check for cleanliness and several more in surrounding areas (20-30 miles away. We are in the middle of nowhere.).
Let me know what you think.

I'm not sure yet if it will be possible due to indeterminate timing involving family issues. However, if it works out, do you have room for RV parking (about 50 feet required plus room nearby to drop the back to unload car) or is there an RV camping place near?
Tom @ Fast Forward

My HOA no longer does battle with me so you could probably park on the street. :) But there is RV parking/camping not too far away so I'm sure that is not a problem.

Tom We well be there and well probably need to get a motel since we well have our little 7 lb. dog with us. Check out the motels there and see if they are any good, if not guess we well have to stay in PHx. Look forward to it. John

I would love to be there, but I won't be making my cross country trek until July. I will be sure to look you up then!
I plan on 3 weeks, travelling from Ohio out west via KY, MO, AR, OK, TX, NM, AZ, UT, CO, WY, SD, IA, IL, IN to home. I plan on mostly NON-interstate travel. Any suggestions on sites not to miss?

Make sure your air conditioner works well. You will not miss anything if you could avoid the west half of OK and the north west part of TX unless you want to say you have seen the flatest place in the universe with no scenery.
Several national parks in Utah while some might say are just a bunch of rocks are spectacular and all different from each other. Bryce, Zion and others I can't remember. All of southern Utah is spectacular scenery wise. The parts of Colorado I have been through on the old hiways are interesting.
If you like caverns, Lehman Caves near Baker, NV just outside Utah off hiway 50 are pretty cool.

When you see me this time, it'll most likely be with me and mine - my (2 yo) twin girls as well as my new son Dylan. :)
Now how do I get that many car seats into my Miata? LOL

Chuck,
You can do like my wife and I used to do. We had two Miata but we only had two children. It used to drive people nuts when we went grocery shopping and they took the groceries out to the car. They would start putting bags in one Miata and fill it up. Then we would go to the other one and fill it up. When the stuff was all loaded, we would get in and drive off. Usually with them staring after us.

I've got the solution for you. I'm thinking of selling the 32' toy hauler that I used to use for multiday autoX events out of town, and the Dodge diesel pickup to pull it. Ramps and all for only $57,000. That way you can take the car and all the kids too. (I realize you don't need all that just to go to Tom's but for all the So Cal autoXs you want to go to.)

Dangit Tom...you mean I'm going to have to drive all the way across Texas, New Mexico and up into Arizona through the stinkin desert in a car which no longer has A/C? Oh well...I suppose I if I've done it on a motorcycle a few times...
I'll check the schedule, but since I am no longer allowed to travel for work, I think maybe I could disappear for a few days and come out and meet some of the other nuts who love these little cars and all those little doodads you keep enticing us to buy. Better be some good cold beer...

Years ago I had a rep in Houston. He liked Cadillacs. I was with him one week and we decided to visit a heat treat company in Monterey Mexico. We took off on a Friday afternoon across Texas. I was driving and liked my license in those days. :) I was tooling along when, up in the distance, I see a car with one of those bubblegum machines on top (this was 1976) so I slowed down to around 80. That woke him up. He said "Why did you slow?" so I pointed up a mile or so ahead (you could easily see 3-5 miles). So he says "This is Texas and this is a Cadillac with Texas plates, he won't bother you. Pick it back up." So I rolled back up to around 100 where I had been and easily passed the officer. He didn't even blink and soon slipped off into the distance behind me. Can you still do that today? :)

Not quite that easy today, but I can say that for the 5 years I owned my 69 Porsche 912 I passed several highway patrols doing well over 90 in a 70 and worst I ever got was a nod, I think that car was blessed, only time I was ever pulled over in it the cop asked if I had a few minutes because one of his partners was a Porsche nut and could I wait a few minutes for him to come take a look.
Cops get a bad rap, there are some good guys out there.

How about Saturday? I don't think I would be in the mood on Friday after driving 900 miles even if I got there in time. Things are conspiring against me even getting there on Friday. Delays in parts getting the body parts fixed and trying to do brakes and sway bar at the same time (as the body work). I may have to come in a battered car.
By the way, did you ever determine if the Torco had some influence on the injector problems awhile back, I don't think I saw any followup?

Where would I be able to stop on the way into town Friday evening to get the 101 octane to which you referred? I will try to make sure I have at least a half a tank of room to add since the last 91 fill up. That way it should be good to go for a dyno.
Maybe I can duct tape some wheels on my loud muffler to tow it behind me on the way there. It makes it sound more powerful which should impress the dyno machine. (I put the stock one on especially for the trip because the Roadster sport is too annoying.)

The gas station that sells the 101 is near the dyno so you can fill up before getting the car dynoed.

Now you tell me. I asked for a recommendation via email some time ago and never heard back so I studied the ones in Coolidge on Google's sat. image. picked one and since no one was available to take a reservation, got reservations at the other one. Very scientific study. I figured Casa Grande was too far away.
By the way, some friends and fellow Miata owners are passing thru on the way to my house on the same weekend and will be staying in Casa Grande in their Motor home (no Miata). He felt like it would not be polite to crash your get together so isn't going to participate even tho I told him he probably wouldn't be thrown out by security.

Tom,
I can't make it - been goofing off getting my car ready for the Ravenwing-McKeever Driving School at Streets of Willow last weekend - now I gotta concentrate on paying work for a while.
The track day was FUN - I got about 90 minutes on-track time for about 75 miles of full-out driving. Plus, if you're in the "advanced" group and bypass the classroom instruction, you get an extra hour or so. The ride-alongs and instruction from professional drivers was informative (I learned quite a bit). Terry and Janet (Ravenwing) said they're planning 2-day events next year which means LOTS more on-track time. I recommend it for anyone interested.
Have fun on YOUR day!

Anyone who is anyone is at the Monaco GP every year, and I'd give anything to drive Formula 1, I've actually driven 2 F1 cars already but not raced them. To expensive for me.

BTW, I asked about the cost for the dyno. Tom said that they should charge a very small fee - ~$40? - for a base run.

What time are we starting? Do they take credit cards?

I'm glad to see they take credit cards, it's in that link you posted? How many cars are going?
I see you posted before I could finish:)
Tom are you bringing the 99? I've been thinking of dropping in higher gears in the rear and going with a 6-Speed. 5th gear is just too high for my taste, it revs like crazy at 70MPH! Someone on the site said you have that exact setup in your 99, is that correct?

Yup, he's running the 3.6 on his 99.

I knocked down 152HP, I was expecting about 145 so I'm happy. It was a good time, met quite a few cool people, and the shop had a lot of cool cars. Nice place, I'll definitely be going back there.

I got 194 rwhp at about 10.5-11 lbs-boost. No ping and really no issues except I am running 115mm crank pulley and it would seem I should be making more boost. WE dropped the cat and that was not the issue. I am not sure what my torque was but it followed close behind. I will scan in dyno sheet once I get it e-mailed to me. I am going to take a peak at my bypass valve and make sure it is closed all the way.
We did compression check and it was good. Top of #4 did have some carbon build-up but mtr was not pinging.
Hey man it is hot in AZ.
Only 3 CS dynoed including mine, and one NB JR M45. One had a leak of some sort making a loud noise, and the other was unfortunately a ping monster. The JRM45 was tight and pulled what to be expected.
Tom takes it on himself on anyone that buys his kit to get it running and posting numbers regardless if it has anything to do with the kit. This is just the truth, he and his wife Kathleen are very generous people.
Even at 194 rwhp my car is a hoot to drive. I am going to check the bypass and get me a LC-1 and bigger pulley. I had a good time.

The ping monster is now quiet as a church mouse. That was an 01 and it just pinged from 3000 up. Didn't care about A/F or quality of gas, etc. It just pinged. I stuck in one of the prototype timing cards and pulled 3* from 3000-7500 and it runs awesome even on crap 91 in 100F+ heat. I have no idea why it pinged? Bad cat, carbon, etc.?????? But it runs like a race horse now. ;)

Yah Tom, I think with the wide variety of engine conditions, gas quality etc. you will be selling a bunch of those things. I'll be one of the first in line.
Tom:
I guess I have one of those 01' ping monster.
Since installing the new injector connector, my car now pings less, but still pings. I have clean out the small amount of carbon deposits on the piston heads. Now they are shinny. I am totally at a lost! Someone locally had installed a retard timing device and pulling 3 degrees less and that solved his pinging issue. I can not change my timing with that device since I have an
01'
Question number one - will adding your retard timing device be CARB legal in CA?
Question number two - when will it be available, and how much?

Jeff, I have no idea about CARB?
They are scheduled to be $300 MSRP. I am thinking that I will supply one to any FFS Coldside customer for 25% off ($225). You have to cut 2 wires in the PC-Pro harness and solder in 4 wires. Then you have to connect 12V and GND. Takes about 20 minutes to remove the harness, connect the wires and re-install the harness. I am checking now on availability. Note: These are BETA (pre-production) versions. I am trying to figure out a way to test them before shipping?
The adjustments allow you to simply pull up to 10 degrees in the green (0-3000 RPM), Yellow (3000-5000 RPM) and Red (5000-7500 RPM). If you set the Red to pull 2*, for example, when you enter boost above 5000 RPM it will simply pull 2 degrees all the way to redline. The next adjustment (Green/Blue) will allow you to pull timing from 0-2* per pound of boost. If you set it to 0.5*, for example, when you enter boost it will pull 2* at 4 PSI, 3* at 6 PSI, 3.5* at 7PSI, etc.
On Jon's 01, all I did was pull 3* in Yellow and 3* in Red. On my 05 I pulled 4* in Red only and that allowed me to run crap Shell gas that I previously couldn't run on even in cold weather. When we tested the 05 on the dyno, it looked like ~1.5 WHP lost per degree of retard. For the 05, which only runs on the street, it seemed like a small penalty to pay to run really bad gas in 100F+ heat with the AC on. I think, but have not confirmed, that I could now up the pulley safely on the 05 and get the WHP back up. I'll start a new thread about the card when I get some here. I still need to test one on a 94/5, 96/7 and my 99. It would be really cool if I could pull 4-5* and run the 130mm pulley on my 99 on 91 octane. However, I doubt it is that miraculous. Even if it were to work great like that, I would still run race fuel on the track. An ounce (gallon?) of prevention is worth a pound of cure, as they say.
I still need to test one on a 94/5, 96/7 and my 99.
Dang proximity again. I've got the perfect 95 guinea pig sitting out in the garage! ;)

I should be there mid July with my 96 and would like to try it. Also considering the upgraded wideband controller you have mentioned.
Tom:
Are the adjustments made on this retard timing device before you connect it to the pro-pc cards, or do you have to reprogram the pro-pc cards.
I am wondering because the CA pro-pc cards are not adjustable.

To add my 27 cents (with inflation correction): My wife and I enjoyed Tom and Kathleen's hospitality and observed first hand Tom's unequaled dedication to trying to solve all the world's automotive problems, even if caused by things out of his control.
My only complaint is the lack of air conditioning in his driveway but with the low humidity, the shade was tolerable. Luckily I didn't have to work too hard trying to isolate the noises coming from my car. We finally gave up and made some guesses. I can live with it since I can't hear anyway.
We all enjoyed watching Buck working hard in the hot sun while we lounged in the shade of the garage. Buck is a fun guy. I am glad to have met him. Also, I enjoyed meeting several others including Chuck, Jonathan, Elphaba (Dan?) and some more that I don't remember names if I heard them.
Thanks to all who helped Tom in his quest to get my car running better. We at least got the Air/fuel a lot better than I had accomplished.
Finally, I will not be driving 900 miles in one day ever again. I am way too old for that.

The timing card is independent of the other cards. It will ship with 3* pulled from 5000-7500 RPM but you can adjust it anywhere you want.

Hi all, I'll add my $2 as well (California prices).
I HAD the infamous '01 Ping Monster.
After Tom did his magic on the dyno and fixed my e-cool and got my a/f looking good it still had ping :ack2:. Was it carbon? The (new) cat? Bad gas? Who knows.
Tom put that timing card in and the Ping Monster disappeared. Even on Safeway gas!
On the way back I drove striaght through to Indio on that one tank in what must have been 110*+ heat coming off that road, A/C on, 85mph (shh) and I think it started to really heat soak. Every once in a while I'd get a couple of pings and I'd just put my foot down to run the e-cool for a sec . Eventually I gave it another notch in the mid-range to shut it up. Now that I'm sitting in Santa Monica with Chevron gas and perfect weather I've knocked it back down to 3* again.
I drove out to AZ with the bypass open and half a can of Torco in the trunk and I came back in boost and the Torco still there! This timing card is great. The best part is I can set it to 0 if I get the carbon off, put a little 101 in and want to have fun! Now if only CARB would let me have a larger pully!!!

The FFS CARB kit does NOT include any timing retard device so it will not technically pass CARB with the new timing card. However, the timing card is sold separately from the CARB kit, so FFS has no control over what you install on your car.
Even with the timing card, when a smog station connects the OBD2 reader, they only check that the base timing is correct. They should not be able to tell that you have a timing control card install - unless you tell them.
Again, the timing card is completely separate from the PC Pro and is adjustable. You should not need to adjust the PC Pro.

Well, we had about 10 people all together. It was a blast. Next year I will be more organized and it will be even more fun. I think maybe we should have it in the fall. The weather is really nice that time of year out here. Saturday was over 100F when we were at the dyno. Hard to make power at those temps.
In any case, those that could make it had fun and seemed to like the way I make Marguritas. Let me see if I remember the ingredients? Glass, ice, Tequilla. Yep, I think that's it. :cheers2:
