View Full Version : New MP62 Outlet Manifold - Driving Impressions

Since I replaced the outlet manifold on the dyno, I finally had a chance to drive it for a few days.

The bottom line: My initial impressions of the car feeling stronger is cofirmed even more so. I now find myself having to feature the throttle even more so than before. When my car was NA, I could just floor the throttle coming out of corners and not have to worry about too much power. WITH the SC, I've had to be very careful especially at higher than say 3000 RPMs. With the new manifold, I have to be careful even at very low RPMs. Just today, I was a little surprised taking a corner coming off the freeway. The car just had power where I didn't expect it to.

As I've said before, I'm not dreading so much having to step down a pulley size when the weather gets to be in the 110F+.

With the PC Pro and the increased efficiency of the blower with the new manifold, I'm getting more power making less heat.

Thanks Tom.

Very Nice! I have a bit of a clearance problem with the BRP manifold. The front ps corner rubbed on the hood. How is the clearance with the new unit?

I can use one of those to replace my BRP, "chromed", one. The chrome plating is lifting up. But, I'll get the new one polished!:)

I thought there may be some clearance problem too seeing as how the new manifold is 3" in height to 1.5" for the old one. But, there doesn't seem to be any rubbage anywhere.

Tom,

I hope it fits because I sure want to try it. I got the TDR shock tower brace because the 3" intake hose was a little too big to squeeze between the blower and the OEM shock tower brace. The TDR brace reduces the chance of rubbing in that area quite a bit.

I'll order one from you when they are ready and see how it goes.

Thanks.

I will have 10 in stock next week. Let me know quick if you want it plain like the one on Chuck's car. If you want one they will be a mere $150.00 plus shipping. First come, first served. I will anodize them black and engrave FFS ASAP but will hold a couple out for those who want to polish it (Wayne, speak up. :)).

I just love this new power!

I was coming back from lunch yesterday and at the red light, a minivan was in lane #1 so I pulled into lane #2. The street goes straight into no where except the back entrance to some commercial areas so there's no one around.

The light turns green, so I take it easy in 1st til I get across the street than I punch it (not WOT cuz I don't need to) and spin the tires in 1st. I shift into 2nd and I'm still spinning the tires. By the time I get a chance to shift into 3rd, I have to slam on the brakes to turn into my parking lot (again, no other traffic besides the minivan waaaay behind me).

AS I slowly navigate the parking lot, I hear a feeble "meep" coming from the minivan. I guess I was going too fast for him? LOL

Well, OK. I had time to put one in a box and make the label and Wayne was oldest on my inbox. Soooo, I did it. Then UPS still wasn't here so Bill was next (actually John was next but I didn't have the PC-Pro together so, Bill was next. Grabbed his email for the address and he had a note "Don't forget to drill and tap and install the boost fitting.". @#$%^&*()_ Opened the boxes real quick, set up the drill press, offset the angle for the top and drilled them and tapped them and installed the fittings and stuffed them back in the boxes as UPS drove up.

The rest of the plain ones will ship Monday. Black anodized w/o logo will ship a week from Monday and the black w/logo will probably ship two weeks from Monday. I am assuming plain on all orders unless otherwise specified. After this batch there will only be plain and logo. Black without logo is one too many items to try and do inventory control on. Those who have asked for black with no logo before we engrave them will get them from this batch.

What's the outlook on me getting one of these with a PC Pro this week?

As I fix more problems, I am creating new ones. Last night, I went out and did a little testing... at 5000 rpm, in 3rd gear, wot, I saw an indicated 10 A/F ratio. I don't want to kill another O2 sensor or cat out on the track this weekend, so I am hoping there is a PC Pro in my future.

I also took a look at how BRP "sealed" my A/A intercooler hose connections, and re did them. Found another 3 psi after that. I Think I heard a little pinging/knocking up above 6K rpm. Time to start using my SS for extra cooling, and put my colder plugs back in. At least on the track, I will kick the fuel up to 100 octane, too. Actually, if you could send me a map for using the SS for cooling, I would be very thankful. I have the one it came with, and I already know that I want to change it, but don't really have a direction to go with it.

Thanks again,

John

Just fitted and test drove my car with the new manifold. Well, seat of pants is noticeable....especially in first gear. My car was already 240rwhp so its difficult to distinguish small increases anyway. It looks great and fit easily with no modifications to intercooler piping on my TDR a/a ic. I got a plain one and then decided to paint it flat black. I haven't dynoed it but could believe 5-10 ftlb....every bit counts.

Worse luck is my car is using 1 litre oil every 1000kms but the engine has done 190,000km. I am wondering what the cost for rebuild ?

I definitely can feel a SOTP on mine with it on now. Internally it has a lot more cross-section than the original outlet manifold and it looks like it is shaped in the natural way the air would want to flow. Unfortunately, the little plastic bypass actuator on my supercharger failed again (the rubber diaphragm started to leak) and thus I only got to test it for a couple miles or so before I wimped out and decided to tie the bypass open until I get a replacement.

With the new outlet manifold on, they just seem smoother to me.

If that bypass actuator is the same as the one on the coldside, maybe we all should have a spare ready to go? Sounds like a vulnerable part. But then I thought the screws on the old IAC would be vulnerable since 99MX5 had many break but mine never did. The bracket broke in half instead.

Serpico
03-19-2007, 06:34 AM
Bill,

Do you have the little brass restrictor installed on the bypass actuator?

I'm trying to figure out if running without one shortens the life of the diaphram.....

Tom @ Fast Forward
03-19-2007, 07:58 AM
I don't think they break that often. Normal mode of failure is when you pick up the SC by the nose and the bypass. It is not intended to be a lifting handle. ;)

FormerDatsun510Man
03-19-2007, 11:04 AM
I promise I didn't pick mine up by the bypass :). I have had a few go bad and they all seem to break in the rubber diaphragm part. I did run one of them in the beginning without the brass restrictor... it lasted about 2 years before that one broke. However, since then I decided to leave the brass restrictor in there... I suppose they had a good reason for it :).

That said, I kinda wish the bypass actuator wasn't plastic or at least it could be easily taken apart to replace just the rubber diaphragm part. They currently make them as a complete disposable unit with pressed fittings.

Bill

Anyway, I can't wait to get a fresh non-oil burner engine in there... this setup is going to rock! I am thinking 230rwhp with only the 120 pulley may be very possible. That is better than I ever did before with the 130 pulley!

Bill

Scuba Steve

How does one know if the bypass actuator is bad. I understand you can compare it at idle compared to when the engine is not running. But was is the symptom when the car is running.

Does it stay in constant boost or ????

Since I am waiting for an order from Tom, I might consider picking one up to have on hand, just in case.

Tom @ Fast Forward
03-19-2007, 08:04 PM
Steve,

With the engine idling and the hood open, blip the throttle and watch the bypass. It should snap closed for a second or so and then pop back open. If it does, it is OK.

FormerDatsun510Man
03-20-2007, 07:35 AM
As Tom pointed out, just blip the engine and you should see the bypass actuator snap the bypass open and closed. The open (bypassed) position is with the actuator pulling on the lever. The closed (boost) position is with the bypass actuator in the relaxed position and the bypass lever should be against the stop screw. When the rubber diaphragm breaks the lever stays in the relaxed position and thus it stays running with the bypass valve closed. The symptoms on the road are pretty subtle, since you still control the throttle with your right foot :) the boost just comes and goes as before. The biggest difference is that the idle sticks at 1500rpm though... at least in my case when the rubber diaphragm broke, due to the vacuum leak induced. The other more subtle thing you notice is a slight whine at part throttle and low rpm that wasn't there normally.... that's because the air is going through the blower unbypassed when it normally was bypassed.

Yup! I agree! I just installed my shiny manifold and took a test drive. I definately feel more pull in first and second gears. Real close to the feel I had with the 140 pulley, but I'm running a 130mm pulley now. And besides that, I don't have to look at the 3 worst letters in the alphabet when I open my hood. And I DON'T mean...FFS! That alone was worth the price!

The PC-Pro should automatically correct for the new found boost and flow.
