View Full Version : Stainless steel EGR pipe...

I right at the point now where I'll be connecting the stainless steel pipe. I got delayed a little as I dropped one of the brass compression collars and had to go out to the corner hardware store for a replacement. I am sure that as soon as I back the car out of the garage, I'll find that little bugger!

Anyhow, I'm concerned over the length of the pipe and the distance between the EGR plate fitting and the vacuum manifold. Quickly measured, the distance is about 2 and a quarter inches from the center of the plate fitting to the entrance of the fitting on the vacuum manifold. The stainless pipe is considerably longer.

Now granted, I didn't disconnect the EGR crossover pipe on the exhaust side, and didn't even loosen the bolt on the back of the engine. But even if I did, I don't see how that would help the situation. It is like it needs to be at least an inch further to the rear of the vehicle to make enough room for the stainless pipe. What have I done wrong? Or does the stainless pipe go that far into the vacuum manifold? (I think not)

Mark, the distance varies quite a bit from car to car so we send that tube out for worst case (long). You may need to trim it a bit. I figured people could cut it a little shorter easier than cutting it a little longer. ;)

Thanks for the quick response Tom. I was tempted to cut it but afraid I had done something wrong. I just didn't want to find out later that I need the extra length.

Also had to trim about 1" from mine with a Dremel tool.

I had to trim both ends of mine. Be sure to de-burr the insides of the tube where you cut it.

I trimmed about 1" of HEIGHT off mine with a Dremel / carbon disk (LOVE those things!)...

Turns out you MAY want to check into cutting it nominally anyway, because IIRC from Tom, there might be some restriction on some of those pipe ends where the cutting wheel wasn't in top form...

An inch off of one end and about 3 quarters on an inch on the other made it fit perfectly. I would have never guessed that the inside diameter was that large!
