I have been hearing a metal squealing noise lately. It seems to sound like brakes noise but lighter. It happens when I put my foot on the gas pedal,
But if the preasure is to light or to heavy its gone. bad belts? any one else have this ?

I can't hear high frequencies over about 2.5k hz but if it was light enough I might be able to see it.

My advice: go fire about 200 rounds of 30-06 ammo without hearing protection and it will go away....no that isn't quite accurate, it will be there all the time, especially when there is no background noise.

Thom,

Will you be at Lordstown Sunday? If so, Chip and I might be able to offer up some totally uneducated thoughts...:)

Count me out!

Once bitten, twice shy!

If you were the last person on this planet to ask, I wouldn't.

Once bitten you should know....

From you brief description, I assume it is not drivetrain. It makes the sound when it is not moving - right?

The things I can think of that might make a "squeel". In no particular order:

Belts - check them for tension. Spray them with a mist of water from a spray bottle and see if the sound changes.

Clutch bearings - throwout bearings can squeel. Does the sound change when clutch in or out?

Vacuum or exhaust leaks - can make whistling noises. These can be tough to find.

Timing belt tensioner/idler pulleys - bearings can begin to fail, should come from front of engine.

Fuel Pump - can sometimes make a high pitch whine. Shut off the engine and put a jumper between ground and the FP connection on the diagnotics connector, you will hear the pump with the engine off.

You need to narrow down the location by using a rubber tube to your ear and listening to different areas.

bogey: it makes the sound when it is moving only. Belts are tight and the mist does not change the soundas it will not make the sounds when the car is sitting still and just racing the engine. It just happens when I push on the gas peddle and at just the right presure.too hard or fast, or to little and it is not there.( the sound )Maybe vacuum leaks but ho do you find those? Fuel pump test no sound like the squeek that I hear.I can not do the rubber tube test as I only hear the sound when I am driving.Do not hear the sound sitting still and racing the engine. This is a tought one but I will figure it out. It doesn't seem to be causing a problem but it is very annoying.

Please don't bite me!

Check for a small rock in your disc brake dust sheild.

Just drive in reverse and they usually pop out if that is what it is.

I have had the pebble in the brakes before. Not a nice sound.

Alert! Serious post this time.

Mine seems to make a slight sucking noise from the intake air at certain throttle positions. More throttle changes it to other kinds of noises. (Similar to when I used to turn the air filter cover upside down on an old truck.) The muffling of the air flow isn't as good as having a thick plastic box around the air filter.

Yep. And, if you put an even larger pulley on, that 'sucking' sound gets even BETTER. ;)

The sound I have is not a stone in the brake system somewhere I am sure
also It does not sound like a air noise either.

The sound, maybe a better discription, is like the squeek that comes from the car when the belt for the altenator is too loose. My sound is not that loud but it is there when I hit the gas peddle at a certain presure. to little or to much and the sound is totaly gone. Thank you all for your thoughts, they are helpful.
