View Full Version : It's ALIVE - sort of...
Well I was finally able to fire it up yesterday! But a few minor problems along the way.
On the first attempt, the IAC started dripping coolant. Rats. Take that apart, scrape all the ultra black off both sides, clean it up and reassemble, using a bit more ultra black than the first time. But there in lies another problem. One of the ears busted off of the IAC housing. So now I've only got three screws holding it to the plate. I don't know if it will be enough to hold the water pressure. I may half to buy a new IAC.
So wanting to fire it up again but not wanting to wait for the ultra black to cure, I just bypassed the water lines around the IAC. I can't believe there would be any danger in running this way temporarily.
Nice smooth idle! 7-800 RPMS. No fuel leaks! After warming up, I hit the throttle by hand (waiting for new bracket from Tom on Tuesday :( ). My boost gauge has a peak recall function so I can rev the engine by hand and then look at where it was! 10 lbs!!!! I can't wait until Tuesday!

You're getting boost by just revving the engine? Hmm. That's new one.

I do too, my boost gauge jumps when I blip the throttle. If I rev it high enough, I'll also hear the blower whine.

It will jump a bit as the bypass closes BUT, 10PSI? I've never seen more than 1 or 2 PSI with a throttle blip at idle? Well, something new every day.

wow talk about lag control
OK. So I now see that boost on just revving the engine isn't that high. My gauge needed to be reset for peak values. But I am reading a small amount of boost by blipping the pedal! Thanks for the new bracket Tom!
I reconnected the water lines to the IAC today at lunch since the ultra black had a few days to cure. Started it back up and drip.....drip......drip.....drip. :( I thought maybe with a healthy dose of the ultra black and the 3 remaining screws, it would be enough. No such luck. I was able to get it sealed using a c-clamp where I saw the water leaking. But that ain't no way to fly and boy am I anxious at this point to fly!!!!!. I think I'll give it one more try tonight and see if I can get it sealed. I just hate thinking about getting a new IAC just because I can't get the dang thing sealed. They run about $450! I just might be able to drill a new hole in the adapter plate and get a bolt to "catch" the edge of the IAC and put a nut underneath.

Mark, I bought a used IAC for my '94 from Mike's Place (http://www.mikes-place.biz) for about $75.
Pat.
Pat,
Thanks for the info. I've got an email out to them to see if they've got one!

Call and talk to Anne or Mike. It'll be much faster.

Definitely. Mike is like Tom; he's one of the good ones!

Other than this IAC issue, I am EXTREMELY happy! I've got the idle adjusted near perfect. No droop whatsoever. Nice smooth transition from cruising to boost and back. Idle hangs around 1200 RPM's while de-accelerating and then drops to somewhere between 800 and 900 at a stop. I haven't had a chance to go out and push it hard for a long drive but so far happy happy happy!
Next stop is the shop around the corner to have a bung put in for my wideband O2 sensor.

Mark,
Make sure the switch is adjusted correctly on the TPS. That makes all the difference in the world to the idle.
Got it! I've got it to that the switch opens with the slightest amount of foot pressure on the pedal! If I end up replacing the IAC, I would guess I would need to go through the throttle stop screw adjustment procedure again, right?
I wish the wiring on the power cards was just a bit longer so that I could get them more out in the open. Is there any danger in extending the wiring?

No problem extending the wires. Let me know if you want some colore coded the same.
