View Full Version : How much boost can I expect?
OK. I know that I should be more concerned with how much air is going through the engine. But I've got to ask how much boost should I expect to see on a 95, with the Coldside, right out of the box? After getting the idle all adjusted and running smooth than my new baby's butt, my boost gauge is peaking around 12 - 12.5. The meter is a brand new Autometer. I thought a couple of things when I saw this kind of boost figure, thinking it should not be that high right out of the box.
a) Gauge must be wrong. So I got the E-Cool PC-Pro out enough to where I could see it while hitting the gas. A full 6 lights lit up so the gauge reads what the cards are seeing.
b) OK maybe a plugged cat. 95,900 miles on the stocker. Since I already had an appointment at my local shop to get a bung welded in for my AFR meter, I picked up a Jackson Racing high flow cat and had him throw that in while he had the car up on the lift.
After the new cat, I'm still getting 12.5 lbs of boost! Can this be correct? And if so, any estimate as to the HP I'm making?

Mark,
Which pulley did you order/get?
I never specified a size. Whatever came in the kit as ordered. I'll have to go out and put the calipers on it later today
OK. Went out and measured. 65mm on the nose of the SC and 110mm on the crank.

Funny,
I am running a 115mm at the crank on my 10AE and only getting 11-11-5 tops in boost ? Changed out and went back to a 110mm and got a dead even 10 lbs of boost.
I was over at Tom's house :2guns: (uhh that fits and dont ask) and changed belts, new pulley etc and same results.
We thought it might be my brand new boost gauge so we ran a separate boost gauge and taped in right after boost source line at CS instake manifold and same readings on his. Is this bad? Or good? I dunno but it was darn sure consistant after we threw different pullies etc.
Odd thing is I am getting 7 lights on my PC pro card which would mean...somewhere around 13 to close to-14lbs of boosts, and I am not loosing any boost anywhere, I dont have a vacumn leak.. it is not making a weird noise under boost and we got to hear it on the dyno.
So, I believe at this point.. my friend that not all set ups and the results are going to be the same.... only answer I can think of. I also dont think that the PC Pro light indicator regarding boost is not an exact. Tom agrees with that I believe.
Good luck, listen carefully when dialing in and of course you will have fun.

The 105 get's about 10PSI and each 5mm inrease should add ~1.5PSI. You should be 11-12 PSI with a 110mm but will vary from car to car.
I would have answered sooner but I didn't get my 6:00 AM wake up call this morning and slept in. ;)

Buck is just 'special'. ;) The rest of you should get the right numbers.

Not getting too specific, but I think I agree with Buck on the "different cars, different boosts" theory. I always seemed to get a little higher boost numbers than what I read about in other similar cars. Now that my car isn't similar to anybody else's, it doesn't matter what I get. With out having rechecked it since I got back from Tom's dyno day, it might vary somewhat with elevation. I thought I was getting bigger numbers at home but in the PHX area it was down about 2.5 lbs. I need to look at it again when my car is out of the Hospital from getting some plastic surgery.

In 5th gear blazing down the country road here in Maypearl TX right at 7.k rpm it would appear I am at 13 lbs of boost. Or very close to it. I was not getting that much in AZ. I dont have a vacumn leak, my belt is not slipping... my car runs strong... that is the boost I am getting. Plus ping until I loaded up on the e-cool.
Bambam does not want to go Boomboom so I need to be careful. I am only shooting for anything over 200 rwhp and I will call it a day.... for now? I mean you can only go so far right? After that your on the edge and for what? 10 more rwhp ? It aint worth it.
Hell for educational purposes I was thinking about buying a 1.8 from the bone yard and punching it out to a 1.9 and learning stuff along the way. Then I could run alittle more boost, or what ever. First things first... get my present set up like I want it.
sorry for the thread drift...
