I am looking at getting 5-gallon portable air tank to replace my little portable device that hooks into the cigarette lighter.

How many quarters does it take to fill up a 5-gallon tank?

Depends on how much pressure your tank is rated for .

Boy, you think that was stupid......... I almost said about 1,000, depending on their thickness.

You can buy a small 120v, 1 gal compressor for almost the price of a good tank. It is not practical to go to a quarter place and feed $ until your tank is filled.

The one I am looking at is from Harbor Freight and maximum storage is 125 PSI. However, the pressure gauge reads up to 200 PSI?

So you are saying not to get a tank. Correct?

Right, you can get a small tank mounted compressor with a suitcase handle on top and use it just like a tank. Just plug it in until it is pumped up and carry it to where you need it and use it. Then when you get home, plug it in again and you're ready to go.
I think you can get one for around $49.

I have one of those small compressors. You have to tell us what your intended use is. If it is inflating tires, that small 1 gallon tank might do one tire without re-charging. If you have 110VAC available at the track and can plug it in, that is a different story. Otherwise, you are way better off with a 3-5 gallon tank that you fill/charge and take along. If you can't plug it in, capacity is everything.

It is for adjusting the tires' pressure at the track. I do not know whether or not the tracks have power or if they do where the power might be. Probably better off using my cigarette-outlet powered little compressor. (I guess that is one good thing about people smoking - no need to rig up an outlet.)

Laugh if you will, but I have a $20 5-gallon air tank AND a super-cheap Wal-Mark cig-lighter compressor. While I change my tires, prep, etc, I fill up the tank to 80-90 PSI, then use IT all day.

As you know, the compressors are too slow when you need to make quick adjustments, and you DO NOT want to do the quarter thingie.

THANKS. That is what I will do.
