View Full Version : Megasquirt Anyone?

Hey guys,
I'm finally getting my car back together from a blown engine (damn ELF!). Flyin' Miata did an excellent job with the engine. I do have the old pc and split second to run things, once I get the engine back in. And, I've considered upgrading to the PC Pro. But, I can't get past the $500 per pcpro price of entry. So, I'm thinking about going Megasquirt instead (I know I could get just one PC Pro and let ecool be controlled by the split second, but still...).
Given my car's near death experience, I want better control and analysis tools (i.e., data logging) than the old pc can offer. Long term, I want to find a way to add a water-to-air intercooler (I've already talked to Tom briefly about buying an extra intake manifold to see if I can modify to work - but don't know yet and this is further down the road).
Anybody thought about going with a Megasquirt or done it already with a coldside?
Any issues that I should be aware of in trying to make this work?
Tom, any interest in working with me to get the e-cool working through Megasquirt versus the split second that's currently on the car?

Carl,
I'd be happy to help any way I can but I am totally devoid of knowledge on the Megasquirt. All we do with the 2 PC-Pros is tune the first one for about 13:1 and then adjust the E-Cool for about 12:1. Let me know how I can help and I will try.

Actually, that's quite helpful. I thought you might have some more complex approach based on getting the temps down throughout the rev range. But, if it's let the stock injectors do 13:1, then get the ecool injector to do the rest to 12:1 across the rev range, then I think I can handle the tuning.
Once I get the car back and get Megasquirt installed. I'll try to make it work. Thanks Tom!

Just remember, when you do the 13:1 part, stop around 5000 RPM.

Got it. Thanks Tom.

EDIT: by Tom Van Dan Elzen Original message deleted.
I would prefer if this didn't turn into an advertisement for the MS. Mnet is the place for that.
The original question was OK and I tried to answer as best as I could. I am pretty open when it comes to some of these things but.... Hope you understand.

The people that did the engineering for the Megasquirt now have their own company. They have improved on the design and I think it called the Specter.
With the harness it costs around $925. However, it takes a day on the dyno to get everything right.
So I forgot that real fast. :hammer:

maybe it is www.diytune.com

This is it

They also sell Megasquirts, etc.

Any updates on megasquirt and how it worked on your car???
Megasquirt could be an interesting option for us coldside owners wanting a little more control especially since they now have a plug and play unit with apparently good basemaps!

I'm interested as well. Thinking of squirting my car as it sits, and getting a coldside down the road.

James up in Colorado got his kit in Early September and has it up and running with the MS. He is now working on WI for it and will dyno when the WI is done. I don't think he has redlined it yet but said it is running well.
He is up at 6-7000 feet but "She made 187hp/139tq SAE corrected, 150hp/127tq uncorrected. Up from 106hp/102tq SAE corrected, 85hp/82tq uncorrected in stock form. A solid 80HP pickup." That was on a 110 or 120mm pulley. I forget.

Good to know. I'd like to go the water injection route as well once I get squirting and get a coldside.

It is a 120mm pulley. I just confirmed.
Looks hopefully like he will be back to the dyno with the WI running next week.
Then a 130mm?
I did indeed get the WI install completed this week. Hopefully I'll be back onto the dyno next week. I'll give you guys an update once I have results.
Incidentally, I'm netting 12psig peak from the 120mm pulley. Bear in mind that is in Denver, and thus is equivalent to about 9.5psig at sea-level. Our blowers and snails really have to work a lot harder up here.
The MS has been running real well so far, by the way. I've been very happy with it. And if the basic on-off WI control I've implemented (with a pressure switch T'd off the boost signal) gives good results, then I plan to make the relatively simple hardware modification to the MSPnP necessary to provide progressive WI control (when coupled with a fast acting valve).
Incidentally, the MS is not really compatible with the NB or NC Miata. I believe it can be made to work, but it's a kludge.

Yeah, I've been doing a lot of research, and it isn't too hard to make it work on the NB, just has to be installed as a piggyback for fuel/timing, not the main controller.

Well I jumped ship....
I got an offer for my LINK and gave in and sold it. It had a few idiosyncrasies that I didn't like anyway. I ordered up a MS PNP last night, so the learning curve starts again.
It's going to be a fun month or so...
*FFS should be here today
*New injectors are being cleaned and flow tested this week
*LINK swapped with the MS PNP
*somewhat custom WI with custom failsafe (still in the works)
*4.3 viscous rear end swapped with a 4.1 Torsen
*1.6 brakes replaced with 1.8 brakes
*Custom airbox (Details at a later time)
I have a feeling my little "Bumblebee" is going to turn into a "Killerbee"

Sounds like you maybe jumping in to Wasp status. ;)

Cool. I built thousands of Turbo Bumble Bees and a couple hundred Turbo Killer Bees. Now I get to help make Supercharged versions.

Of course, the Killer Bees were only used as contest prizes and not sold. :)
ps. Don't bother to go to Playmaxx.com, we sold that site when we sold the company to Duncan.
