View Full Version : Considering a FFS kit but concerned

Hi, just joined after browsing these forums for the last few weeks and I'm considering a kit but have some questions/concerns.

I've got an '01 6 speed that's completely stock atm and I've read a lot about the issues and concerns with the higher compression and vvt in regards to FI. I was originally looking at the JRSC M45 but I'm a bit concerned about possible future upgrades. The M45 is running at almost full capacity straight out with little room for upgrades and I don't want to install something now only to want to replace the whole package a year from now. I came across this website and have been looking into the FFS kits because they offer far more of where I think I'd like to be in the future with my Miata.

My goal is to keep my car as a daily driver and wind up in the 170-180 WHP range (minimum). I don't think I can get there realistically with the M45 due to the redline limitations of the SC. However, I've been warned to be very careful with the amount of boost I'm introducing due to the higher compression and VVT. More specifically, I've been given some advice by another owner of an '01 to be very careful when exceeding 7 psi boost as he has personally known other '01s that have run into large issues when they've exceeded it. I realize that with any performance mods that add these kind of gains there's always some level of risk and possible shortened life of the engine but I'm trying to keep this in check, even if it means that I've need to stay more on the conservative side with my boost.

Any information would be much appreciated in regards to my concerns.

Cheers,
Phil

All you have to do is drive Tom's '05 to see it is no problem. Think about it, that car went through some pretty rigorous testing as a smog mule to get CARB certification. If it can get through that then yours should be just fine.

I've got an '01 SE with the coldside. I've had it on since February and absolutely love it. I'm running right at 10lbs of boost right now (CARB kit) and while it doesn't get much exercise in my daily stop-and-go commute, when I get a chance to wind it out, it's worth it! Just get some gauges and do some proper tuning to manage the risk and don't worry about it.

Just working on the tuning part of my FFS coldside... Idle is perfect, performance is fantastic, very OEM off boost.... Just need to get to the dyno to finishing the tuning, and make sure any ping is under control. The most amazing part of these kits is that Tom is always there for you, try to get that kind of support anywhere else!

Tom's customer service is outstanding. I have a 02 and probably had more problems then anyone in this foum which is why my avaitar is what it is.
Anyway most of the problems I caused my self in what I did during the install. The kit is a great kit and the car now is running outstanding with 200 WPH so I have been told. The new PC-PRO that comes with the kit
will fix any issues with the VTCS. I love the horse power and it keeps my car very easy to drive as a daily driver. Any question ask any one here
they will be more than glad to help you. Tom will always help you anyway he can.
As with any project like this there is always some tweeking to bew done.
You looking at the best bang for the buck, (not you BUCK. ) well maybe.

WHY don't you give your location, and ask for a ride and a face to face with the owner on any problems ????

There IS a reason why ThomS has JOE BTFSPLK for an icon. ;)

I drove his 2002 a coulple weeks ago and it ran PERFECT. Right to red line with zero problems. Well, it did toss an 0171 code randomly. We discussed it and decided to try replacing the O2 sensor. He went to Mazda and bought a factory part. Plugged it in and had ping/knock bad from ANY RPM. Took it out and went back and got a second one and plugged it in and it ran perfect again. That could ONLY happen to him. ;)

Of course the good news is that we discovered a bad O2 can run without throwing a CEL that it is bad and still make the car ping/knock really bad.

The supercharger is still the best thing I have ever done.
And there is a bright side, Look at how much I have learned about
the car and how it works..BUt little dont be afraid this is the best unit out there. I am in cleveland Ohio come drive my car when ever you want and see. OUTSTANDING. You too TOM.

I'm about an hour and a half east of Toronto, Ontario, Canada and I'm moving out to Vancouver Island (British Columbia) towards the end of August. I'm military but I'm not complaining about the new posting ... I don't have to put my car away for the winter any longer!
