View Full Version : What additional upgrades, costs are needed

I've been reading the different threads, which helps, but want to know if there are any additional vechicle upgrades that are needed/required with the Cold or Hot side Superchargers before, after or during having it installed?
If the Hotside kit complete says $3495 plus shipping or the Coldside $3695 plus shipping, besides labor costs, is this all that I should expect to be out?
I'm worried that after I drop $4k on a supercharger I'll then need to upgrade every part that is affected by it.
Do I need to upgrade my exhaust, etc..
Thanks in advance.

The only thing I can think of that you may have to upgrade is your clutch because it won't last long w/ the new power. New clutch? Maybe $300. Also, a new set of spark plugs or a high flow fuel pump can't hurt either. Those things can be had for under $200. Of course we're talking bout driving on the street here. If your taking it on the track, you may want to get gauges, new radiator, etc. which can add up to $$$.
Again, these are all supplemental parts. Your kit should be good out of the box. IMO, the M62 has been around the miata community for about 5 yrs now and it's finally reaching a level of sophistication where you will not need to replace the parts that came with the kit. If you purchased a kit a long time ago (like I did), then you would be spending alot to bring the old kit up to where the new kit is right now. To me, that's a point where the drivability and reliability is what we expected all along back in the early 2000s.

Thanks for the feedback.
$300 new clutch.
$200 Spark plugs & high flow fuel pump.
Finding a shop to install is for less than $100 hr labor, and the 6-8 hours required = priceless.
Anything else missing?

I believe Tom has a suggested set of iridium plugs for the FFS kit that you can talk to him about. Also for the high flow, i'd recommend the walbro 190lph. The 255 works great too but it makes a whining noise at all times which can get annoying. I'm currently trying to install some dynamat to muffle out the high flow fuel pump.

Doesn't Tom include a set of Iridium plugs with his kits? Also, I have never been short of fuel even before I upgraded to my FFS fuel rail. I only upgraded because Tom gave me such a good deal on the fuel rail.
As for a clutch, I would drive it as is for a while and wait til it starts slipping. You will more than likely need to replace the clutch eventually, but why not wait til you really need it?

You may want to upgrade the radiator though. Even though Watsonville doesn't get very warm, more power=more heat.

I thought concerns with uneven fuel distribution with SC were with pre 2001 Miatas? I have a 2002, so should I be concerned? Or maybe I'm mixing up what I've read.. So would I need to buy a fuel rail?
Does this make sense?

At the base level SC kit, I don't think you need to worry about fueling as the 01+ have slightly larger injectors than the 99/00. As I said, I have a OEM FP with an OEM fuel rail up to a 115mm pulley and I was NEVER lean.
Just remember that the 5th injector is only providing about 5% of the total fuel (or some small portion).
If you were to go upto a larger pulley like a 110 or 115mm, than you MAY need some additional safety measures for fueling and timing. But, at the base level, unless your fuel pump is bad or not working as it should, I don't think you need to worry about it yet.

You shouldn't have any fuel delivery problems if all of your componets are in working order. The coldside kit comes with new spark plugs. I chose to add a few aftermarket items as back-up protection and monitoring. (I like watching gauges.) A wideband oxygen sensor, A/F gauge, boost gauge, 37mm Koyo radiator because I will be autocrossing (I was told the 55mm would interfere with the RB 1.25" sway bar.), Mazdaspeed motor mounts. I'm holding out on the differential mounts for now. My clutch has the cursed '01-'02 chatter that never got replaced. Since the car only has 12k I'm just going to run it till it goes and then go with the FM Happy meal clutch package w/13# flywheel. As soon as Tom releases the timing cards I will add that (I'm thinking bigger pulley already.) Since our cars have the higher compression/VVT, stick with the pulley that comes with the kit, 105mm.

Don't feel so bad. I had the clutch replaced on my '02, and the shudder is still there. Either the local Mazda never did the work, did it but didn't do it right, or Aliens are taking over the panet! It just shudders when it's cold. Probably a good idea for me to replace it.

Iridium spark plugs are included in the kit.
