Thought I'd post this here. It showed up on our local club's bulletin board. This is the project car that was built by Miata Magazine and named "Copperhead".

At the very least, an interesting little story. They're looking to get $30,000 for it when it goes to auction but the local guy who posted it said they'd take the highest bid over $23,850!

Enjoy!

Beautiful Miata! Not that I am doubting Gary :), but is that 300rwhp? I would be afraid to run that power level on a stock engine for very long. On the other hand, if that setup has seen enough track time without any issues, it might make me reconsider the pulley I run on mine LOL. The one thing that car needs though IMHO is the R4 intake manifold. That would really finish the supercharger setup nicely!

The description mentions 300 crank HP.

From the link:
"When the initial build was completed, the car Dyno’d around 180 HP, now it stands tall at approximately 300 HP thanks to the skillful tuning hands of Gary Shuhart. You read correctly - 300 HP. "

Not to nitpick :), but that too me reads as meaning 300rwhp since the 180hp I would assume to be rwhp since typically 180rwhp is what these supercharged setups make at a minimum in base form.

Whether it is 300 crank hp or 300rwhp though, I am very interested in how it specifically is setup. Because I would LOVE to get my setup cranking that kind of power. Basically I have very close to the same setup, but differ in the details I think.

Do you really think that engine is stock?

I feel 225WHP is the limit I would push any form of boost on a stock engine. That would be impressive if it could track at 300WHP on stock internals.

I have a problem whit them saying they hit 300whp with stock fuel pressure on 385 cc/min injectors. That is pretty impossible. By my math 300 bhp might be doable but that would require a bsfc of .5 and a duty cycle of 100% even taking into account the NB running 60 psi of FP base the bhp limit at 100% DC is still 338 given a .5 bsfc. I highly doubt the SC is staying that effecient or the TDR can keep up at that level, with such effeciency. Bottom line this is a most likely a 230 whp miata that someone wasted alot of money on paint and body work. In short id pull ;):cheers2: 60K+ invested BS i hope no one was that rich and stupid.

They took some liberties with their writing style. It pretty clearly states deeper in the article that the 300HP was CRANK HP -- in the same article where that opening line compares the 180 WHEEL horsepower to 300.

Had to be written that way for effect. Wouldn't be quite as compelling an article if they didn't Assuming it IS 300 gross HP, that would put them somewhere around 246 at the wheels - a VERY believable number, IMO.

Shit, I have a Dyno chart showing where I hit 225whp after installing kits, and that's on an 83,000 mile-old / internals totally factory intact engine on OE injectors. And I didn't do any of the tricks that some companies use to boost their peak dyno readings.

This car is pretty cool, but the only Miata I have seen making 300 WHP used turbos, and an engine that had nothing left from Mazda but the block casting. (short of LS1 and 5.0 conversions of course!)

Just my $.02

Plenty of turbo 300whp miatas man the trannys just don't like to last long there. Yeah 300 bhp is abit closer to being believable. Still 60K is friggin ridiculous.

It's not impossible to make 300WHP with the MP62. BRP did make 300 WHP on a stock 99 engine with the MP62 hotside. I do believe it was only driven to/from the dyno and made the dyno runs. I would guess it's street life would be extremely short BUT they did do it.

Yes the mp62 is highly possible at 300 whp but it would require more than 380 cc injectors at 60 psi Tom you know that the theoretical output matches my 16g very nicely. And at 18 psi it sure feels like more than 300 whp. :D

I don't even need 300 WHP. All I want for Christmas is my 130mm pulley back. :) I think I will have one (or more) of the production timing cards this week. It and the 130 are going in the 99. I think I can break things fast enough with the 130. I already proved I could snap a half shaft in half (does that make it a quarter shaft?) with 225WHP. I think the new timing card will give me my Christmas present.

Don't get me wrong. I'm sure 300 WHP would be a blast. I just think the life of a stock engine would be measured in minutes, not thousands of miles.
