View Full Version : Wonky boost gauge?

I've never had a boosted car before, so have no experience with boost gauges. However, the behavior of my Autometer Sport Comp II is making me suspicious:
When I shut the car down, the needle does not return to 0 but stays stuck in vac. If I tap the the gauge repeatedly, it will go back to 0.
Something inside the gauge is rattling around, sounds like a maraca with one tiny bean.
The needle action looks a bit jerky, not smooth.
The max boost I see is 8-9 psi. (105mm pulley) but the car feels very strong.
Send it back? Unfortunately, I had to chop down the mounting studs to make it fit in my pod.

My Autometer vac/boost gauge works smoothly so I would say yours is at least farkled if not totally wonked. I would call to see if you could return it but with the studs cut off...Who knows? Did you cut them with side cutters? I wonder if the shock of the cut may have whiplashed the innards.

Could be why you are seeing 9PSI?
Yep. Sounds totally 'wonked'. DZon't know that term but I can guess it's meaning. :)

Could be why you are seeing 9PSI?Yah, what I'm thinking.
I sent autometer an inquiry, let's see how their customer service stacks up.
Drove the car 160 mi. today on an old, familiar route. Somehow, I knocked 30 min. off the trip.

I think you should worry more about getting a good V1 than worry about getting the gauge fixed. ;)

Yup, it's wonky, farkled and fubared.
Today it read only from 30 heg to 7 heg. Car is running great, seems to be getting even faster? Autometer said to send the gauge to them for repair/replacement.

I read this post about three times and then concluded heg must be a word like farkled. :)
Then, the engineer in me discovered you were developing a new Atomic symbol for Hg (Mercury). You and my brother-in-law would get along great. When we play scrabble, he always wins with words like Fubarb and Farkle.

I applied to Julliard. They sent me a letter back asking what musical instrument I played. I wrote back "The radio". Never heard back so I went for engineering as a second choice. :)
