As seen in the Air intake relocation thread
http://www.fastforwardsuperchargers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=569 (http://www.fastforwardsuperchargers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=569)
There is a new air intake design that is planned to be incorporated into the kits sometime in the future. For those current kit owners that are interested in upgrading, I will be making complete upgrade kits with instructions.
The intake kits include a silicone elbow, MAF reducer sleeve, wheel-well splash shield, oval air filter, fasteners and installation instructions. You will reuse the three hose clamps from your current intake.
The service I provide is to locate and fabricate all the parts, trim to specs and include photo-laden install instructions for $30 plus price of parts and shipping. The actual parts costs are: $55 for the elbow, $15 for the reducer sleeve and $40-$50 for the filter (There are two filter sizes.). With this service you avoid the risk of trimming too much and ruining parts (ask me how I know ;) ) and you gain a complete and tested design.
This is a proven design that was tested in numerous autocrosses, trackdays and a dreaded high-speed super-puddle test ;).
The filter is located at a height above the front axle and in a cooler location farther away from the radiator. An added benefit to this intake is that the oil filter in easy to reach from the front for oil changes. :)

Is there a need to use a silicone elbow at the throttle body?
I'm not sure what the surface temps are there, but if they are not too high, a rubber elbow could be used. You can pick up the same elbow in rubber for about a third of the cost.
I like the idea. Great work!

Its not the temps that require the elbow, its the length of the elbow legs to accommodate the MAF so that it isn't damaged by rubbing on the firewall and possibly being crushed when the engine rocks when it hits the rev limiter. The MAF is made of a fibrous composite plastic that is very brittle.

If it fits on a 94...ill get one from you over the winter.

Good point! This design was created on a NB. I'd have to check dimensions from the firewall and front suspension cross-member under the intake manifold.

Ari, I didn't follow that other thread lately, and I can't figure it out from those pictures - is this layout similar to the one I did last year, where I moved the filter to the front of the right front wheelwell?
If it is - then for mx3jmcb, there should be room for Ari's setup, but the splash shield might have to be different. Have a look at the location I used:

This design places the filter under the intake manifold. The elbow goes straight down to the MAF and filter. There is only one bend in the intake hose. The wheel well shield is behind the wheel, not in front of it. Heres a shot of the shield from the wheel well.

This is a great solution to relocating the intake. I tried something similar when i was installing the kit, but the filter was too large for the area under the manifold. I've been working an a layout similar to Gordon's behind the passenger fog light hole. Anything to get teh filter away from the radiator.

Ah, OK, I do remember seeing that setup discussed! Cool stuff ;) !

How high above the ground is the filter? As low as the level of the belly pan or somewhat higher?
In my climate, it's not splashing that I worry about, it's megapuddles (small lakes) that can come up over the door sills. One makes every attempt to avoid them, but every now and then there is a camouflaged dip in the road or even a small sinkhole that opens up.
I'm satisfied with using the stock intake box. Much too quiet for Tom, though; I couldn't even hear the SC whistling while standing next to the car when it was on the dyno.

Will this set-up work on ABS equipped cars?

The filter is located several inches above the axle. It should fit ABS equipped cars unless there are more brake lines under the intake manifold. This elbow takes less space around the throttle body. During testing, I did go through a monster puddle to see how much water would reach the filter. I performed this test without the shield. the filter did get wet, After I made the shield and retested, the filter was dry.

I just got the air intake installed on my 97. The install went fine and now my wife can get to the oil filter a lot easier!!! I really like where it is located.

You got your wife to change the oil & oil filter?
I'm jealous. ;-)

Glad the install went smoothly :) I'm jealous too. I'd be happy if the wife did the wash and wax ;)

At the autocross 2 weeks ago, when I had to work the last run group, my wife changed my wheels and loaded the trailer!!!!
Unfortunately, she had sore arms the next day and won't do it anymore but that one time...priceless.
My wife is dutifully proud that she has never changed a tire in her entire life. She wouldn't have the first clue as to how to go about the task!

I just thought Id post an update of the cold air box version of the intake. The design is finalized and we have ordered materials to make them. Stay tuned!

So what will I need to get this setup for a hotside?
99mx5
04-07-2009, 09:07 AM
This air box was designed for both the NB hotside and coldside. The only difference is that the hose length is different.
We found a design flaw at the last minute and didnt have them cut last week. It has been corrected and should be cut soon.

Is the big thing with the yellow handle one of those high precision tools that help you make all those bends so straight? :)
99mx5

Its also used to straighten the bends ;)
